LA STORIA

Pizzicati int’allù Core Canzoniere Jonico Salentino

Represent the richness of more than twenty years of popular tradition. Since 2007 this group has been supervised by the artistic direction of Valerio Manisi and, after the fusion with the “Compagnia del Teatro Jonico Salentino” (The Company of the Ionic-Salentino Theatre), it assumed its actual composition. They inherited the old tradition from the local singers of Grottaglie.

In 2007 the band resumed work and a new project has been implemented, thanks to the unceasing dedication of fulfilment, research and composition of Valerio Manisi. Mr Claudio de Vittorio, since 2012 member of the group, through his great art and experience, has been contributing actively.

Nowadays, the “Pizzicati int’allu Core CJS” attracts thousands of people in hundreds of squares, and with their euphoria, entertainment and their will to involve everybody, they “inject” the public with their huge repertoire and the rhythmic intensity of the “taranta”.

Their peculiarity? Strength and originality originated through the concept of “tradinnovazione” (tradinnovation, halfway between tradition and innovation; the colleague band Mascarimirì firstly coined the term), always present in the remaking of traditional songs from the areas of Ionio and Salento, but also in plenty of original works.

The “Canzoniere Jonico Salentino” wants to symbolize the historical cohesion of the musical culture from Ionio and Salento, and to preserve it, in memory of the creators, singers and musicians of Grottaglie.

The history of the repertoire of Pizzicati int’allu Core CJS is quite bizarre, compared to the other bands in the area of Taranto and, in general, of the Ionian region.

Grottaglie was namely part of the province of Lecce until the beginning of XX century and was certainly one of the main centers of “Alto Salento” (upper area of Salento) because of its extension and population, within the famous historical region of “Terre d’Otranto”.

Like Galatina, Grottaglie was a centre of tarantism as well, thank to the famous church of Saint Vito (Santu Vitu in dialect), sadly destroyed.

The “Pizzicati” represents today one of the most famous, interesting and original bands within the overview of the Italian World Music; moreover they are the official godfathers of one of the most important events in Apulia, the “Taranta Folk Fest”.

They had the honour of playing with Eugenio Bennato, Teresa De Sio, i Cantori di Villa Castelli and Vituccio ‘de Carcagn’, Mimmo Gori, Pino ed Emauele De Vittorio, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Mascarimirì and Claudio “Cavallo” Giagnotti, Giancarlo Paglialunga, Maria Mazzotta, Massimiliano Morabito, Dario Muci, Davide Berardi, Roberto D’Alessandro, Carlo Canaglia De Pascali, Anna Cinzia Villani, Sud Foundation Krù, Antonio Castrignanò.

In addition, they took part  to events such as Womex, Medimex, Fiera di Manresa, the Taranto Finanza Forum and in occasion of 2 editions of the famous Ballati Festival, Musica Mundi, Festival dello Scorpione, Apulia Film Festival.

At the first edition of 1MFestival for the “First May” concert in Rome, they reached with 4510 votes the 4th place against 700 competitors.

Their first album “RonDanDò” released in 2010, produced by the Compagnia del Teatro Jonico Salentino: this project based mainly on the sharing and on the contamination of popular music, in cooperation with renowned representatives of the new ethnical project.

The music and the concerts of Pizzicati int’allù Core CJS didn’t reach only the local areas in Apulia but also lands away…such as Moscow and Dmitrov, where the band played two concerts in December 2014, enchanting the hearts of Russians.

On 5th August 2015 the “Canzoniere dei Pizzicati int’allù Core” was the first band from the Ionian-Taranto area, in the north area of Salento, to play on the stage of the Festival “La notte della Taranta” for its 18th edition.

After the success in lands away, the energy proved in Italy and abroad, the Pizzicati int’allù core represents undoubtedly one of the most relevant and prominent Italian bands in the World Music, as they were described in Russia “a tornado of energy”.

In 2016 their very first “intimate” album will be released, including mainly original and fresh songs, with the title “Sciamu”(in dialect Let’s go), named after the song “Sciamu” of Valerio Manisi.

One of the main goals of Pizzicati int’allù core CJS, and also of Canzoniere Jonico Salentino, is to teach the world, and above all the Apulians, the strong and beautiful musical tradition of the areas surrounding Taranto, which, nowadays, are subjects to the ruin and the condemnation of industrialization.

One curiosity: the name Canzoniere Jonico Salentino is inspired by the activity of more than 50 years of Michele Orlando, accordionist belonging to the old singer group of Grottaglie, named “di Santu Cosmo” (for Saint Cosmo). Mr Orlando transmitted his experience to Valerio Manisi, since he was 5 years old.

Pizzicati int’allù core CJS Traditional is an exclusive project in its traditional composition, differently from the complete orchestra of the Canzoniere.

We are speaking about 5 multi-instrumentalist members who play the entire repertoire of Pizzicati in an acoustic arrangement: it is a project which uses the richness of typical Apulian songs, persuading with an incredible rhythmical and musical intensity.

“Pizzicati int’allù Core”.
